FOCUS: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry is the best system for recertification, self-assessment, and lifelong learning in psychiatry. In one package FOCUS provides a comprehensive review of current clinical practice based on the content outlined by the ABPN recertification exam. Twenty AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are available per year for the issue quizzes, and an additional 20 hours can be earned through completion of the end-of-year Self-Assessment Exam. FOCUS addresses the core content in psychiatry with each issue briefing you on new developments and reviewing the current state of practice in that topic area. All current and back issues are available online.
The FOCUS Self-Assessment Exam is an annual 100-question, multiple-choice supplement written by practicing psychiatrists and academic experts that allows you to earn up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The FOCUS Self-Assessment Exam is listed by the ABPN as an approved self-assessment activity that fulfills the requirement of psychiatrists applying for and taking the recertification examination.
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology has reviewed FOCUS: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry and the FOCUS Self-Assessment Examination and has approved this program as part of a comprehensive lifelong learning and self-assessment program, which is mandated by the ABMS as a necessary component of maintenance of certification.
The FOCUS Self-Assessment Program is also accredited for up to 20 hours of continuing professional development per year under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
As a supplemental educational activity, FOCUS presents eFOCUS, a patient vignette survey delivered to APA members by email. A case vignette with treatment choices allows a clinician to think about how he/she would assess and care for a patient and then compare and contrast it with expert opinion and with the approach of other colleagues. There are no wrong answers - all of the options represent valid clinical approach to a complex case. After participants have electronically returned their responses, eFOCUS will follow with another email containing an "expert commentary" on the case by a prominent clinician/researcher in the clinical area being addressed.
