The Paul J. O'Leary Innovation in Psychiatry Award

The first Paul O'Leary Innovation in Psychiatry Award will be presented in 2023 at APA’s Annual Meeting. It will honor individuals who reflect Dr. O’Leary’s values, including quality and access to mental health care in communities, behavioral health care teams, and crisis de-escalation, stabilization and wrap-around services to support recovery.

The Solomon Carter Fuller Award

Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller is recognized as the first black psychiatrist in America. This award, established in 1969, honors a black citizen who has pioneered in an area that has significantly improved the quality of life for black people.

The John Fryer Award

Dr. John Fryer was a gay psychiatrist who played a crucial role in prompting APA to review the scientific data and to remove homosexuality from its diagnostic list of mental disorders in 1973.
