Programs, initiatives and opportunities for APA members to get involved in the organization.
Advocacy and APAPAC
APA works every day with policymakers on Capitol Hill, in the Administration, and at the state level to shape legislation and regulations that advance our profession and promote the highest quality of care for our patients and their families. But advocacy can only work if APA members are involved.
APA Fellowship Program
APA/APAF Fellowships provide psychiatry residents the experiential learning, training and professional development they need to be leaders in the field of psychiatry. In addition, APA Fellows get exclusive opportunities to be a part of APA leadership councils and network with APA members from around the country.
APA Caucuses
APA specialty interest caucuses promote communication and networking among member psychiatrists who share a special interest, so that they may bring attention to important or emerging issues to APA, patient care, and the practice of psychiatry within that special interest area.
Minority and Underrepresented (M/UR) Caucuses
The M/UR caucuses provide networking opportunities, advance treatment of minority patient populations, advocate for minority mental health issues, provide representation in APA governance, and foster communication among members who share interests.
APA Special Interest Communities
APA members are invited to join the following special interest communities, which are created by the APA Administration to provide forums on the APA Communities platform. APA Communities provide online hubs for discussion, resources, and networking.
Leadership, Equity and Diversity Institute
The Leadership, Equity, and Diversity (LEAD) Institute to allow psychiatry trainees to refine their leadership skills and enhance their knowledge about diversity, equity and inclusion. The goal of the institute is to create more culturally responsive leaders in patient care, scholarship and research.
Medical Student Programs
APA/APAF Medical Student Programs provide medical students who are interested in serving underserved communities the experiential learning, training, and professional development they need to be leaders in the field of psychiatry. These grants give medical students opportunities to travel to APA Meetings (Annual Meeting and The Mental Health Services Conference), receive mentorship from psychiatrists and leaders in the field, and more.
Mentorship Program for APA/APAF Fellows
The APA Mentorship Program aims to help APA/APAF Fellows in their transition from Resident-Fellow to early career psychiatrist members in the APA. The Program pairs current Fellows with fellowship program alumni to provide guidance and counsel as Fellows transition to practice, navigate their careers and become leaders in psychiatry.
Research Colloquium
Since 1996, the mission of the Research Colloquium for Junior Psychiatrist Investigators has been to promote the research career development for early career psychiatrists through mentoring and networking activities. Senior research and statistic/methodological mentors work with our chairs, director and program manager to create a unique and immersive experience for Colloquim participants from the U.S. and Canada, and around the world.
