APA Congratulates Its Members Elected as Officers to the Executive Committee and Board of the World Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) today announced that three of its members have been elected to leadership positions at the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). Two will join the Executive Committee for six-year terms as officers of the WPA: APA Past President Paul Summergrad, M.D., will serve as the WPA Secretary for Finances; and Edmond Pi, M.D., who previously served as the WPA USA Zone 2 Representative and vice chair of the APA Scientific Program Committee will serve as WPA Secretary for Scientific Meetings. Bernardo Ng, M.D., immediate past chair of the APA Council on International Psychiatry and Global Health was elected as the WPA Zone 2 (United States) Representative for a three-year term.

New App Will Help People with Serious Mental Illness Develop a Crisis Plan

A new mobile app, My Mental Health Crisis Plan, allows individuals who have serious mental illness to create a plan to guide their treatment during a mental health crisis. The app was developed by SMI Adviser, an initiative administered by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

APA Praises House COVID-19 Relief Package; Calls Upon Senate to Pass Legislation

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) today applauded the mental health and addiction-related resources included in the Heroes Act (H.R. 8406) passed by the U.S. House. Evidence is mounting that the COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating mental health conditions, while the economic consequences of the pandemic have been reducing the mental health and substance use treatment capacity across the country. The resources in the House-passed Heroes Act constitute a needed step toward treatment for mental illness and substance use disorders. The bill includes:
