Runners at starting line for the 2023 Moore Equity 5k

In celebration of Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) invite you to participate in the Fourth Annual APA Moore Equity in Mental Health 5K. This exciting event will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2024, both in person in Maryland and virtually across the country, hosted by some of APA’s District Branches throughout the country, or from the comfort of your hometown.

The APA Moore Equity in Mental Health Initiative aims to promote mental health equity for young people of color through education, awareness, and community support. By participating in this 5K, you can contribute directly to the APA and APA Foundation’s Moore Equity in Mental Health Community Grants Program, which funds innovative programs and services dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for young people of color.

Last year, participants helped raise an incredible $100,000, which was distributed to non-profit organizations across the United States undertaking impactful initiatives in minority mental health.

Why a Healthy Lifestyle Matters for Mental Health

Engaging in a healthy lifestyle not only is beneficial for physical well-being but also plays a crucial role in promoting positive mental health outcomes. Regular physical activity, such as participating in events like the APA Moore Equity in Mental Health 5K, has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance overall psychological well-being.1 Additionally, adopting healthy habits like balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques contributes to better mental resilience and emotional stability. Research supports the notion that a healthy lifestyle can have profound effects on mental health, highlighting the interconnectedness between physical and psychological wellness.1 By prioritizing a healthy lifestyle, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the broader goal of promoting mental health equity for all.
