APA Annual Meeting 2024: What To Know Before You Go
As someone who fully experienced APA annual meeting for the first time in 2023, I want to share how to make the most of your time at the event. When I walked into the convention center for the first time, I felt so overwhelmed but also so excited because opportunity was right in front of me. From the exhibit hall to the meeting app to the photo-op wall, there was something for everyone to engage and connect. I thought it may be helpful to share a step-by-step guide and some tips on how to get the return on investment while attending the meeting. So here goes...
- Step 1: Determine your goals for the conference.
- For me, it has always been networking, seeking mentorship, and creating relationships with my colleagues.
- Step 2: Download the meeting app so you can create your schedule based on your sessions of interest and must go to events/receptions/meetings. Recently published is an all-encompassing blog post on the meeting app—check it out here.
- Step 3: Look through the attendee list & determine who you want to connect with.
- DM or email anyone you are interested in meeting so you can make the most of your time there.
- My life hack—I usually message on LinkedIn. Highly recommend following the APA and the APA Foundation pages so that it can suggest other leaders in psychiatry you may want to connect with. I met many of my now mentors that way, and they can learn about the work I am involved in & my interests based on my profile.
- Sample message: Dr. X, I wanted to connect, and I would love the opportunity to share a little about myself and learn about you! Just so glad to connect on LinkedIn. I’m currently a PGY-4 and an APA/APAF Leadership Fellow. I know your time is very limited, but I would be so appreciative if you have time for a coffee while at APA Annual? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time!
- Step 4: Get social.
- This is your time to meet thought leaders in the field of psychiatry—both in a mentorship or mentee capacity and building your colleague network.
- Use your social media skills and take advantage of the photo-ops. Consider sharing why you are attending the meeting and your goals for the conference.
- Step 5: Make time for yourself.
- Sometimes, you just need time for yourself to decompress – that way you have a recharged battery for the rest of the conference! Highly recommend self-care coffee breaks with walks or getting a meal and enjoying it at a park.
Now, you’re off to the races! Go to sessions, exhibit hall, receptions, and other activities. The APA Foundation Benefit is worth your time—it’s a great way to donate to a charitable cause and network with your colleagues. Also a great time to let you hair down, and dance to a few tunes!
Let’s talk about some tips before getting to APA annual meeting.
This meeting will be one to remember—hope to see you in the Big Apple!
