Frequently Asked Questions about Telepsychiatry

  • January 01, 2021

Drs. Steven Chan and Krysti Vo tackle some frequently asked questions (FAQ) received by our members about telepsychiatry practice and licensing, including:

  1. I have a patient who's going away to college in another state. I still want to check-in with them while they're away. Do I need a license to practice in the state where the patient is going to college, even though we have an established doctor-patient relationship?
  2. Do I need a license in a state where I'm only providing psychiatric consultation services to a physician who is located where the patient resides when I'm not going to have direct contact with that patient?

Watch the short video to hear Drs. Chan's and Vo's answers.

Note: some of these answers may vary based on the public health emergency status in your respective state. A good place to check on this is the Center for Connected Health Policyweb site.

Finally, if you're interested in practicing telepsychiatry with the college student population during the COVID-19 public health emergency, you can learn more by reviewing APA's College Mental Health, Telepsychiatry: Best Practices, Policy Considerations & COVID-19 best practices document.
