The Committee on Telepsychiatry is charged with advising leadership and stakeholders, including developing educational tools and resources for members, on the technical, regulatory, and clinical landscape of interactive technology in the practice of psychiatry.

Term

Three years; volunteer leaders will be eligible for reappointment for an additional three year term at the conclusion of their first term.

Expected Time Commitment

One hour calls every other month for reviewing and responding to requests.

Desired Expertise

• Broad knowledge of digital health topics such as mental health mobile app space, telehealth in psychiatry, telehealth policies such as reimbursement, artificial intelligence, EHRs, decision support systems, Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), data privacy regulations such as HIPAA.
• Knowledge of various government agencies:
  • Office of National Coordinator (ONC) policies such as interoperability standards (e.g. FHIR, HL7, etc) EHR certification, data sharing/blocking.
  • FDA legislation pertaining to telehealth prescribing, 21st Century Cures Act.
  • HHS/CMS rules pertaining to physician fee schedule, public reporting, Qualified Clinical Data Registries (QCDR), meaningful use, virtual supervision of residents, audio only telehealth, asynchronous consultation.
  • AMA and telehealth CPT coding.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a subject matter expert on technology issues for members and external stakeholders.
• Helps craft responses to telemental health legislation.
• Helps develop position statements on health technology topics.
• Assists with writing documents such as blogs, articles, presentations on telehealth topics.
• Helps develop tools for APA members to navigate topics of telehealth and mental health IT such as toolkits, webinars and other formats.
