Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities

The Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities represents and advocates for both minority and underserved populations and psychiatrists from those groups. The Council seeks to reduce mental health disparities in clinical services and research, which disproportionately affect women and minority populations. The Council aims to promote the recruitment and development of psychiatrists from minority and underrepresented groups both within the profession and in APA.

Term

Three years; volunteer leaders will be eligible for reappointment for an additional three year term at the conclusion of their first term.

Expected Time Commitment

The Council meets virtually on a monthly basis on the 3rd wednesday from 8:00pm-9:00pmET as well as in person at the APA Annual Meeting.

Responsibilities

All members are expected to attend (or provide advance notice of absence) and actively contribute to all Council meetings, as well as respond in a timely manner to any e-mail requests that the Council periodically receives. They are also asked to be liaisons to additional components (of their choosing) and report back to the Council. Members also form part of workgroups to review, revise and develop work products such as position statements, action papers and resources documents

Additional Criteria

The Council receives frequent requests for comments, reviews, statements and endorsements from various members, components, the APA and others. Thus members are asked to be responsive via e-mail, and participate actively for these frequent requests, as well as their commitments on workgroups for the Council. Members of our Council are expected to attend meetings regularly, provide guidance and mentorship for our fellow members, attend the Annual Meeting, and engage in all Council business.
