Washington, D.C., July 14, 2022 – The American Psychiatric Association (APA)’s journals were well-represented in the latest edition of the Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics © 2022), in which journals are assigned “Impact Factors.” Impact Factor is a bibliometric calculation that describes the level of influence a journal’s published output has on the scientific literature by measuring how much the work it publishes is cited by others.

The American Journal of Psychiatry, the most widely read psychiatric journal in the world, achieved an Impact Factor above 19. The score can be interpreted as an average, where every article that AJP published in the reporting period (i.e., during the years 2019 and 2020) was cited by more than 19 articles in 2021. This Impact Factor ranks AJP among the highest not just in the category of psychiatry: among all the 21,430 indexed journals in publishing, AJP’s 19.242 places it in the top 200, ahead of 99% of journals in the world.

The latest Impact Factor for Psychiatric Services, which covers the delivery of mental health services, rose above 4 to 4.157, placing it in quartile 1 of all psychiatry journals. Of the journals included in the Health Policy & Services category, Psychiatric Services is the highest ranked mental health journal. Psychiatric Services is also now the #1 mental health journal in the category of Public, Environmental & Occupational Health. Additionally, the Impact Factor for APA’s Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences rose this year to 2.891, its highest since 1999.
