WASHINGTON, D.C. — This fall, American Psychiatric Association (APA) Publishing is releasing books that cover a wide variety of behavioral health topics, including borderline personality disorder, psychopharmacology, social media and youth mental health, electroconvulsive therapy, and many more.

The books are primarily aimed at an audience of psychiatrists, other mental health professionals, psychiatric residents and medical students.

Among the highlights of APA Publications’ releases this fall:

• A robust body of evidence supports the therapeutic properties of the great outdoors. Nature Therapy delves into nature-based mental health treatments such as forest bathing, animal-assisted therapy, and hydrotherapy. Edited by Yonatan Kaplan, M.D., and Petros Levounis, M.D., M.A., the volume features tactical guidance and clinical case examples that show how the concepts can be applied in practice for mental health clinicians and others.
• Addiction and the Law examines the many intersections between substance use disorders (SUDs) and the U.S. legal system. The book discusses the philosophy behind the law’s traditional approach to SUDs, the interplay between SUDs and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and intervention options like pre-arrest diversion and reentry services. Elie G. Aoun, M.D., Debra A. Pinals, M.D., and Laurence Westreich, M.D., are the authors.
• Available in November, the second edition of Disaster Psychiatry: Readiness, Evaluation, and Treatment synthesizes peer-reviewed scientific literature, clinical wisdom from frontline psychiatrists, and personal experiences of those who have organized disaster mental health services. It includes a chapter on self-care for disaster responders and health care workers.
• As the business of cannabis and its use continue to grow, mental health and medical professionals must be prepared to address the effects of cannabis on the mind and body. The Other Side of Cannabis: Impact on Mental and Physical Health, edited by Richard Balon, M.D., and Mary K. Morreale, M.D., examines the effects of cannabis on different age groups, the relationships between cannabis and mental health concerns such as posttraumatic stress disorder, and the efficacy of cannabinoids in treating chronic pain.
