SAMHSA Summer Medical Student Program

The APA Foundation Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Summer Medical Student Program (SMSP) provides medical students who are interested in serving underserved communities the experiential learning, training, and professional development they need to be leaders in the field of psychiatry. This month-long program gives participants the opportunity to learn from world-renowned psychiatrists, receive invaluable academic resources, explore content in the award-winning APA Learning Center, and partake in the organization’s annual meeting.

The APAF SAMHSA SMSP is made possible by funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), under the SM-18-002 Minority Fellowship Program. Applicants are not required to be members of APA to apply to this program.

Program Term

March 1 - August 30, 2024 (Main programming occurs during June/July)

Criteria / Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. medical school. You must maintain your active enrollment status for the duration of the program
  • Ability to commit to the duration of the program

Nomination / Application Details

  • Complete online application form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of Interest (not to exceed one-page) explaining how the medical student program will impact the applicant's career
  • Letter from medical school's Dean's Office or Registrar’s Office indicating the applicant is a medical student in good academic standing

Disclaimer

**Participants in the APAF SAMHSA Summer Medical Student Program will have their awards managed internally as opposed to receiving funds via direct deposit.**

Program participants will have their registration, airfare, and lodging to the APA Annual Meeting organized and paid for by APAF via its online travel system. Following the adjournment of Annual Meeting, and upon the timely submission of receipts, students will be reimbursed for allowable expenses associated with attending the conference (i.e. meals and local transportation that were not prepaid by APAF).

Concerning the APA Publishing and APA Learning Center components, students will identify which books and courses they would like.
