Leadership in Equity and Diversity Institute Training Program

The LEAD Training Program is an exclusive and comprehensive learning pathway offered through the APA’s Learning Center. This dynamic program combines live online seminars with a carefully curated selection of courses to provide psychiatry trainees with critical knowledge on cultural competency which we train them to integrate with leadership skills fostered by our other program components. Designed to support professional growth, the program includes focused training to engage with varied cultural contexts, equipping participants with the insights and tools needed to navigate and address the diverse needs of patients and communities. Through this training, participants are empowered to advance their careers and contribute meaningfully to the future of mental health care.

A flexible and interactive training opportunity where MFP resident fellows can gain a strong foundation of leadership and cultural competency knowledge. This program offers the tools and strategies essential to successfully lead in diverse environments. It provides online courses and lectures, combined with quarterly interactive sessions that facilitate engagement and networking of trainees with leaders of the field of psychiatry.

The pilot phase of the program will be offered to APA SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program awardees.

The program was conceived and developed by the APA’s Division of Diversity and Health Equity and implemented in partnership with the Division of Education. New courses are being created through collaborations between the two departments continually.

The program was officially launched in November 2021.
