Unseen Consequences: Research Linking Childhood Trauma & Epigenetics

  •  Wednesday, January 29
  •  1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. ET
  •  1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ **
  •  Stacy Drury, M.D.

The established link between exposure to early life adversity and trauma, including exposure to violence and racism, with lasting behavioral and physical health risks raises important scientific questions about the processes through which these experiences result in later risk. While original models suggested that a significant proportion of risk might be attributable to health risk behaviors or lifestyle choices, it is increasingly evident that the biological processes, including epigenetic changes, contribute to the underlying pathways leading to later risk across health outcomes. This course will provide an overview of epigenetics and discuss current and developing methodologies with critical attention to the challenges and promises of epigenetic studies. Next this course will describe the current evidence linking epigenetic changes, specifically DNA methylation, epigenetic aging, telomeres and histone modification, and childhood trauma. Lastly this course will discuss future directions of research that is expected to demonstrate mechanisms and provide potential next steps to evaluate the impact of evidence-based interventions on not only behavioral but biological pathways.
